We had a neighboor adventure here this evening. Our crazy neighboor had his sister and her dogs move in o the weekend. The last two days the dogs have been in the backyard for 10-12 hours. They are two black boxers. Nice dogs, although they bark at every person who walks by. On the weekend, they got under the fence into our yard so we were able to put a peice of wood up so they couldn't get through. Monday they did the same thing on the other side and Darryl went and put up a peice of wood on the other side. Now tonight they found away to get under the chain link fence at the back. So I put them back in the yard, and they did it again. So I called the city for them to come and get the dogs. Someone was walking by who works for the humane society and the question came up of how much is too much? Yesterday the dogs didn't have enough water.... today they had more. It been +30here for the last two days. These black dogs have been out for 10 to 12 hours with no stimulation. Just in a big yard. It just hard to know is this bad, yes of course. But is it bad enough?? If they take these dogs away from the neighboor and they go to the humane society and then are not adopted and euthanized. Which is worse.... The dogs aren't being hurt, neglected maybe....
What do you think?? I'll keep my eye on it over the next couple of days and hopefully the owners are around more...

Very thought provoking Jenn - I immediately thought of my neighbours they have two dogs and during the dayhome hours they are crated in the basement. I don't agree with that YET I've never phoned the Humane Society because I worry that they wouldn't be adopted and would be euthanized. I've never considered locking up Lyla in fear of the dayhome kids. I think the kids are at a good age to teach them about animals and how to respect their space and such. Lyla has her own space in the backyard but sometimes she lays on the deck and watches the kids with me.
I'm not sure in your scenario with the neighbours which is worse. If they were running wild I would definitely phone it in though. Having a pet is a HUGE responsibility. I think some people like the idea of having an animal but get bored of the responsibility. Shame on them.

In stead of rejoicing that you have reported abuse you are agonizing over a conclusion that you do not know will happen. What is wrong with this picture.

I think for the safety of the dogs, what you did was the right choice. what if you weren't there to put them back in the yard? they would be wandering the neighborhood, perhaps be hit by a car.
If the owners care about the animals, they will retrieve them from the City, pay the fee, and hopefully gain some education about responsible pet ownership.
If not, the dogs are safe now, and if they are friendly, they will be adopted to a family who will care for them.
