Well sorry for the lack of posts this week. I have been busy with the accreditation and for some crazy reason I picked up a bunch of extra shifts. Luckily three more days of work then I'm off for two weeks and oh how I'm looking forward to it. Even in the spare moments of the last week, I've spent them making cookies or buying presents. I have so much respect for those mothers who work full time. Working so much does make me grateful for the extra days I have to spend with my boys and my husband. Even the time to clean the house. The good part of it all was the hard work for accreditation payed off. And I'll have some extra money with the extra shifts. But I'm looking forward to a little balance back again.
Till next time

Accreditation
Hopefully my hair won't look quite like this after the next 4 days. At work we are having the CMA (Canadian Medical Association) in to do a major review of the program. This only happens every 6 years. We have to prove we are doing a good job with the students. If we don't they could potentially shut us down. So much of it is depending on what other people say about the program.... so yeah hopefully my hair won't look like this.

Quebec City
I was fortunate enough to go to Quebec City for a work conference. It was a great vacation where I got to fly on an airplane by myself, I had a hotel room all to myself and got to learn all about my profession. It was a really fun weekend. Lots of good french food and lots of fun exploring. There were lots of people there as it is very touristy, but that also meant lots of things to do. They would close off streets so the pedestrians could walk through the streets without cars. I was very impressed with how "green" the city was. The majority of their buses are run off electricity, they recycle all of their paper hand towels and really encourage walking. The city itself is beautiful. It feels like a little mini Europe. Cobblestone roads, the buildings and the delicious food. I even posted on facebook "
Like I said it was a fantastic vacation.

Here is the view down one of the streets.

The Chateau Frontenac. Where D day was planned. They cancel hundreds of reservations so that the hotel could be empty.

More roads and more beautiful buildings.
And here is the funicular, which is an outdoor elevator. Takes you up the cliffs.

Quebec City is still a walled city. Here is one of the gates.

This is the view from my hotel room.
And the view at night.
I got to see some old friends, like Chantal, who is great.
And newer friends who we enjoyed fondue with.

It's not every day you get to go for a run on the Plains of Abraham. I think it means I get to have poutine for lunch

Spirit
I am a lucky lady. I have the advantages of working part time so I have a good balance in my life. I get to spend 4 days a week with the kids and 3 days at work. I feel like most of the time I'm a good mom. I love to play with the kids and do fun things with them. I like to teach them things and watch them learn and laugh. But I also think I'm pretty good at my job. Although I don't do it full time I have been doing it long enough that I thought I was respected and proud of what I do and what the students accomplish when they are done. But last week someone told me I was horrible at my job. Someone who I work with all the time. Luckily it's not my boss and I have a similar relationship with a lot of other people and they think I'm pretty good at it. But it has hurt my spirit. It has made me question myself and what I do. And it's hard to know what direction to go now. Is it something to deal with head on or should we let sleeping dogs lie and wait it out till the new school year. It's just hard to know where to go from here. It's hard to get up and go to work when your spirit has been crushed. It's hard to try and rebuild relationships when it doesn't seem worth it. It's hard to spend 3 of my days wondering if I am good at my job.

Community
This week someone wonderful from the x-ray community died. He was friendly and kind and helpful. He died tragically and suddenly and shocked us all. The man who originally told me was crying which made me start crying and I'm still sad about it.
But in all this tragedy one good thing has come out of it. The x-ray community came together to help each other. Today I worked at the hospital where this man worked and people came from all over the city to work in the x-ray department so all of his co-workers could go to his funeral. People came from all over to help each other. It was a good thing that came out of this tragedy.

Through a Child's Eyes
Today there was a pizza party at work as our students are going through there stressful time. As the team leader I volunteered to bring the pizza, even though it's my day off.
As it was my day off I had to bring Lucas in with me and he was quite looking forward to going to Mommy's work. It is amazing how much fun he had there. A place where I go and get stressed and work hard, he loved. (Don't get me wrong I do love my job, but it still is that - a job) He sharpened every pencil at my desk with an automatic pencil sharpener. Then he proceed to sharpen everyone else's pencils. Then he colored with highlighters. Then he played with some various gifts students have given me. He didn't want to leave. Although I convinced him, by telling him we were going to find Pop (who works in the same building as me). He loved riding the elevators, leaving a note for Pop, playing on the couch's in the lounge, getting snacks at the store. Then as we were leaving he saw Pop teaching a class, so went in to see him. Like I said he enjoyed himself as much as if we had gone to the library or played outside.
I guess it makes me appreciate work a little more...

Crazy Neighboors, Weekend Highlights
After working with a dimwit on Friday night I came home and went to bed, only to wake up an hour later to a kid who was coughing so much he couldn't catch his breath which made him cough even more, which made it worse. I felt horrible because I couldn't remember is it best to bring them out in the cold or put them in a warm shower with steam. The way I got him calmed down was by watching his new favorite TV show, Little Einstiens.
Afterwards I decided to sleep beside him, just to keep an ear on his breathing. He did cough, and still seems to cough a little at night still, but that night at about 5am Lucas wakes me up with his coughing and I can't fall back asleep, all I can hear is boom, boom, boom through the wall. There I go with my crazy hair at 5am knocking at the neighbors door, turn your music down, people are trying to sleep. I am old, who can stay up till 5am?!? I do hope they move soon...... maybe I should by a jack hammer and run it this summer, will that encourage them after parting all night.
Sunday I went to a baby shower, it was good to see a bunch of ladies from our old street (although many of them don't live there anymore) and nice talk mommy for a bit. Although I still feel a little self concious around them. Sometimes I feel way older then my age and other times I feel immature. Still good, just an interesting observation.
Came home watched the Superbowl, glad the Giants won, share the Superbowl wealth I say. Tom Brady and the Patriots don't need another ring.
Probably the best thing about the weekend, and most weekends is that Darryl is home with Lucas and I. It's great to listen to them playing, listening to Darryl and Lucas laughing, listening to Darryl teaching Lucas stuff. It's the greatest to be part of a family.

Perks
I'm sure I've mentioned it on this blog before, but generally there are not alot of "perks" to working in healthcare. It's not like there are extravagant Christmas parties or summer picnics that are all payed for. No freebies, or free flights, really other then being able to have a barium enema the next day if one was ordered there are no real "perks".
Although sometimes when I am working, I can come up with a few. Today was one of them becuase we get free CPR training, but I'll get into that in more detail later. On a day to day basis I have a pretty good idea of how sick you need to be to go into a hospital. I hope to never spend some unnecessary time waiting in an emergency room. I know that if you can walk on your ankle it's probably not broken. Or if you have time to shave your knee, its probably a torn ligament and not a break. I also know that if your abdomen ever feels big and hard as a rock you probably have an obstruction. But if you haven't gone poo for 5 days and you have a tummy ache that you should probably take a laxative, not sit in emergency for 6 hours waiting to see a doctor, who will order and x-ray to prove yes, in fact that lack of pooping is a problem. I also know that for chest pain always go into see a doctor, especially if you are having trouble breathing. Experience has taught me a lot about emergencies.
As I said one of the other perks is free training on how to save people's lives. Sometimes I'm amazed that the hospitals pay for it because I've never had to give some chest compressions at the hospital. If they stop breathing I call a code and a bunch of experienced people come out of the walls (at least that's what it feels like they get there so fast) and take over. But they spend half a day with us each year reviewing CPR for an adult, child and infant. I consider this a perk because if I ever need to do full blown CPR it won't be in the hospital but on one of the my parents or grandparents. And we don't give people food or anything they could choke on in the hospital but I know exactly what to do if Lucas chokes on his lunch tomorrow. I do recommend everyone take an oppurtunity at least once in your life (if not once a year) to take a CPR course. Although I may not get free flights at least I'll get to take my dad on a flight if I ever need to save his life. I know that sounds mellow dramatic and I know that only 1% of the time does CPR "save" a persons life, but it does although there brain to continue to get O2 while paramedics come. As an optimist, I consider CPR training to be a real perk.

No Rest for the Weary
I'm am a very lucky girl in that I only work part time. That being said I do work part time at 3 jobs. It never amount to full time, but some weekends (like this one) I am working a lot (although) I chose too. A couple of really good things do come from me work lots. First off (and the less important thing) I made tons of money. I got paid double time for today. That rarely happens, but today I made double my usual wage to go into work, I'm also working on Monday the holiday and that is for time and a half. I do love a long weekend. =)
Secondly when I pick up work at my 2 extra jobs it is only when Darryl can be home with Lucas. I only have daycare for Lucas when I'm at my teaching job, not my clinical job. The best thing is that after Darryl and Lucas have spent lots of time together, Lucas loves spending time with Darryl even more. Right now Darryl and Lucas are down stairs organizing the basement together. Although my guess is Lucas is making more of a mess then organizing. =)
Also a belated Happy Birthday to Darryl. I'll be sure to post a picture of the very cool gift Lucas and I got for him.

Makes It All Worth It
Today was quite possibly the worst day at work. Well it ties with another day when I had done so much work to prepare a great lab for the students and then they did it as fast as possible and wanted to leave. I left the lab crying that the students were so ungrateful. Today was as bad as that day.
But then I came home and Lucas was here. His smile was the best. Then Darryl was changing his diaper and when he came downstairs, he came up to me sitting on the couch and said "love mommy". It was the best. I love you too Lucas.

Happy Friday
Yesterday I went to a retirement party for one of the best people in the whole wide world. Louise has put in her years and has her 85 factor, so she has retired from the hospital. She was a technologist that everyone loved working with. She worked hard, took great x-rays and you always had fun when working with her.
Although we are all sad to see her go, it was such a great evening. I'm not sure if everyone knows this about me, but I moved from Ontario here 7 years ago. My auntie Karen lived here, but I didn't know anyone else. If you are from Calgary reading this it probably doesn't phase you at all, but if you are from most other places, you may be shocked that I moved across the county without knowing anyone. I was lucky when moving here that I got a job at the Rockyview. I was the youngest technologist full time day technologist there by 20 years, but everyone made me feel so welcome. It was like I had gain 5 mothers, 10 aunts and 1 uncles. =). I remember they would invite me for holidays. They threw me the most amazing bachlorette party. It was amazing, in a new strange place I felt like I belong. I don't work at the Rockyview as much any more but last night was going to a really great family reunion. I remember sitting back and feeling an extreme sense of contentment, while watching people laughing and talking. Even though I don't work there I still felt like I belonged at that party.
My friend Safana hosted it. I hadn't seen Safana in a really long time. Our kids were born 2 weeks apart and although we are very different, we are friends becuase of that. Opposites attract. She has an amazing home on the edge of the river. It was so great to see her and catch up.
I hope everyone had a great Friday as well.

Speech
Since we are posting speeches, here's my grad speech from today: It went well. I love a microphone.
I'd like to welcome the graduating class of 2007 to the MRT tea. I congratulate each of you, your parents, extended family, signifcant others and friends.
To the class of 2007 you knew what you had to do to get to this college and to graduate from it. Each year more the 300 people apply to the 24 seats in this program. It is an accomplishment to even get into the program.
I want all of you to know how proud all of your teachers are of your accomplishments. As instructors it is amazing to see students come in on the first day you don't know the difference between a mandible and a patella and by the end of the 21 months are accomplished technologists who can take 10 different x-rays of a mandibles and patellas. This program has not only taught you the language of x-ray but survival skills for the real world, stress management, multitasking and dealing with difficult people. We are so excited to see you join our profession.
I know the past 21 months have been difficult for you. In your interviews I'm sure most of you quoted the work load was going to be the most difficult thing, and I'm sure it was. In first two semesters there is so much new information and exams and projects. Do you remember the first time you touched an x-ray tube or in your first radiographic anatomy class trying to write down all the bones you could think of. In the second year it's how many competencies do I need? And will this go in my logbook. Do you remember the first time you took an x-ray on a real live person? This stress has even effected the most laid back students. In the last part of practicum I received this e-mail from Robert:
I'm Done I finished. I got my AC-Joints Hooray I won't be working now
this weekend. I Feel better I was stressed out for like 10 minutes
there.
You should all be so proud of what you have accomplished. You have been an outstanding class and as you go forward you are fortunate to have so many opportunities available to you. The unfortunate, yet truly exciting thing about your life, is that there is no core curriculum. The entire place is an elective. The paths are infinite and the results uncertain. So if there’s any real advice I can give you it’s this.
College is something you complete. Life is something you experience. So don’t worry about your grade, or the results or success. Success is defined in myriad ways, and you will find it, and people will no longer be grading you, but it will come from your own internal sense of decency. I encourage you to love what you do, Continue to learn, enjoy making your own descions on if you will accept and x-ray or repeat it.
Please join me in congraduationg the SAIT MRT class of 2007.

Pat on the Back
Tonight I am going to a graduation party for the students. Today is there last day of being students, after 21 months straight. After today they get paid to be at the hospital. As a teacher I don't get the daily "thanks" that I got as a health care worker. There is a lot more complaining and a lot more putting out fires. But at the end of the year when they graduate they are grateful. You are so proud of them. You helped to take them from knowing nothing about x-rays and how to take them to knowing as much as the technologists around them. It's so amazing to help them become part of the "community". For them to know all the technologists, for them to have reputations. They all passed and even the pain is the butts made it. They all have jobs and are happy to be done.

Congratulations to the Class of 2007, you made it, I made it too. =)
Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Bitten Off More Then I Can Chew
There are days I feel very mature. As a 27 year old I am happy to be married (6 years on Saturday), have a son and be moving into my second house. In my career I have moved up from my original position and enjoy making a large contribution to my field. When I look at the list it seems that I have accomplished a lot and am quite mature.
I have recently received a promotion at work, but I am totally feeling like I have bit off more then I can chew. Like I have so much to learn and have so so many more things to accomplish. I have already made 3 mistakes today. I am trying to faciliate people working together who do not want to be working together. I would like to give up but quite a few other people are depending on me to get it done. Plus I am trying to figure out as a manager how much do you tell the people you are working with and how much do you make the descions your self. When should you filter information so people don't get upset and how much do you involve people. This probably doesn't make a lot of sense to people, but I don't want to say too much, as this is all public information. I have so, so much to learn and am feeling very immature.
We'll see how these next couple of months go...

Funny Story
This week I have been busy at work, I helped to plan this great experience for the students. At the college we have a simulation lab where the respiratory students practice intubating and care of a patient. They have the lab set up like a ER and the patient responds to everything that happens around them. If the students intubate the tube properly the patient's oxygen level goes up, in they do it incorrectly the patient gets more sick. The other great part of it is that there is a control room with one way glass so that you can watch the students without them knowing. There is also a great group of instructors who help to make the scenario real. Our students benefited immensely from the experience. It was also good for the respiratory students to work with other allied health care professionals.
At certain times the x-ray students weren't available so I filled in as the x-ray student. This afternoon was one of those times. Today I was working in the Sim Lab and was putting on some lead to prepare for the x-ray. I put it on both arms and as I brought my arms through I realized my bra had unhooked. I was stuck. I was in the middle of a scenario and couldn't really leave. Plus there are cameras and one way glass all in the room. I couldn't go hide behind a curtain because there is a camera there. So there I was stuck doing a fake chest x-ray with my bra undone. I'm sure I was acting weird, trying to get this done ASAP. Once it was done I was able to go to the washroom and do my bra back up.
I hope everyone has a great Easter.

A Blast From the Past
Today I went to a career fair at a junior high today. I forgot about how at the beginning of school there is announcements and they play the national anthem and everyone stands. It's amazing that for a few years of our young lives we hear the national anthem. After that we hear it rarely, sporting events. Presenting to the Jr. high students was interesting. Showed them lots of cool x-rays.
Fun to pretend I was young again.

Internet Dating
This week I worked at the hospital where I work once a month. I love to go there. It's a place where I feel comfortable and it's like going home. I know all the people there and they are so happy to see me. Although I quite like my job now, it's a different environment then working at the hospital. The shift that I picked up was spur of the moment because someone called in sick. When I got to the hospital I was working with people who all use to be my students. It made me feel very old. Even though I probably wasn't the oldest one there, I felt like it.
One of the problems of being a teacher is that it limits the pool of people I can pick from my friends. As an instructor you establish a certain line that you don't cross. You can't pick favorites because you hold the red pen. You determine whether these students pass or fail (which they all pass) but you give them marks, so I don't want there to be a whisper of favoritism. Once you have that relationship with someone it's hard to change. So all the 24 students I graduated I'll probably never be friends with. At least not the kind of friends where you get your families together or go out shopping. So I told my very best friend Tammy that she was stuck with me forever.
This brings me to the title of this post. To find new friends I may have found a new way. Blogs..... On Tuesday Lucas and I went to the mall as it is quite family friendly. They have lots of play stations and Lucas likes to play with Thomas the Tank Engine at Chapters. While standing in line at the Orange Julius a lovely lady comes up to me and says: Not to freak you out but are you Jenn? Yes, I reply. I look over and see her son, which I recognize from her blog and realize it's Allie from Life at the Whittinghams. We had a short, but great conversation. Lucas was fussy so I couldn't talk for long. It was cool because even though we had never met I feel like I know lots about her. I was able to meet her new daughter and see what a fun little kid Kaelen is. It was such a good experience and am so greatful for blogs. I guess as the saying goes, when one door closes another one opens.

I love e-mail. I use it all the time. I feel weird if I don't check my e-mail at least once a day. Sometimes on Saturday I don't receive any e-mails and I find it to be a little sad. E-mail has done some great things. I have a better relationship with my dad because of it. When I first moved out west my dad and I use to send e-mails to each other to stay in contact. I remember the first one I got from him I wasn't sure who it was. He signed it with one of his nicknames and it took me a couple of reads to figure out it was my dad. From those e-mails we became very close. Also I can stay in great contact with lots of my friends who live far away. I even prefer e-mail to the phone, then people can respond when they are ready to rather then immediately. I'm sure it also has to do with my geekness as well. Yesterday I had to step out of my comfort zone and call someone I had never met before and ask them to do something for the students. I would have much prefered to e-mail it.
That being said someone sent me an e-mail recently that made me feel like the size of an ant. I'm sure they didn't do it on purpose but the exaggeration they put in the e-mail played on my insecurities and now I'm feeling like I need to do something to help my problem. What is my problem you ask? You all know..... I am a horrible writer. I think I can write from the heart but, I can not write a professional document if my life depended on it. Spelling, grammar just not my forte. My question is how does someone get better at writing professional documents? Is it practice makes perfect or are there just people who are born to care religiously about these things? I don't want to become a perfectionist, if I did there would be no blog, because I'm sure my posts would never be good enough. But I would like to become a better, more professional writer.

Sickness
I didn't know that one of the downsides of having a toddler was they get sick alot. I read quite a few blogs with parents of toddlers and it seems every week one of the children is sick. This week it's Lucas. The other really difficult part of having a sick toddler is that they can't really tell you what's wrong. Lucas cries and I know something is wrong but I don't know what it is. He woke up this morning with a rash on his body put I can't seem to put all the symptoms towards one problem. I did take him to the doctor today, so hopefully some of the test she did will show something, or maybe not and it's all unrelated.
On a better note. I did organized something last week that I thought would be a big waste of time. I was trying to be politically correct (although it took a couple of times to be properly politically correct) but still thought the students would think it was stupid. But oh no, they loved it. It was super successful for everyone involved. I love it when that happens.

I Should Be Cleaning.....
Just a couple of quick things and then I'll leave the post for today. I will write an extensive review of the concerts and the reason I am still glowing. But I need to clean first.
The answers to the x-ray questions:
First one is a snake, The second one is an MRI of a baby. Not twins, just one baby. The third one is chest x-ray with implants and the last one is someone having a barium enema and they have a classic "apple core" sign, which is indicative of colon cancer it is on the left side of their bowel.
Lucas missed his mommy while I was traveling over the province. He is now sick and getting some extra sleep. Hopefully he will be feeling better this afternoon when Oma and Opa are here.
Till the next post and an extensive review.
